Tongtu Takedown Recurve Bow Review

As you take your first steps into the world of archery, you’ll be bombarded with advice about buying your first bow. I think picking your first bow is simple. You just have to find a bow that corresponds to your specific needs. A bow that works for everyone else might not be suitable for you. For example, left-handed people can’t use many of the popular bows. Today, we’ll discuss Tongtu Takedown Recurve Bow, because it is one of the few bows for both left-handed and right-handed archers

Tongtu Takedown Recurve Bow Review

Basic Recurve Bow

Tongtu recurve bow is designed for beginners. It shouldn’t be compared to 500$+ bows, because the price difference is astronomical. It is not made for hunting or competitive target shooting. With that being said, it can be a perfect tool for dipping your toe in the water. Thanks to the eloquent design and prudent choice of materials by the manufacturer, Tongtu recurve bow is extremely efficient despite its simple design.

Takedown bows are meant to be portable. It shouldn’t be surprising that this bow is not an exception to the rule. Tongtu bow is very easy to assemble and take apart. If you’ve never had to assemble a recurve before, don’t worry. Packaging includes instructions for assembling the bow. Even if you didn’t get the instructions, the whole process is so intuitive that you could still put the pieces together.

It is standard for recurve bows to have three main parts: the upper limb, the riser, and the lower limb. Usually, the price of a bow is determined by the manufacturer’s choice of materials. A lot of affordable recurves have plastic risers, but this bow is not one of them. The riser of Tongtu bow is made of aluminum alloy, which is the default choice even for high-end bows. The bow limbs are Fiberglass laminated. There are two draw weight options: 30 and 40 pounds. Limbs can stretch and shoot the arrow powerfully. This bow has double arrow rest, which means that it can be used by left-handed archers as well. In my opinion, this is the best feature of Tongtu recurve bow.

Easy to Transport

Once taken apart, Tongtu recurve bow takes up very little space, so little that it can fit in a backpack. The whole package, which includes many accessories, weighs around 3lbs. You’ll be able to carry Tongtu Recurve Bow with all the accessories without feeling like it’s dragging you down. If you travel a lot, keep in mind that you’ll be able to take Tongtu recurve bow with you wherever you go.

Tongtu Takedown Recurve Bow Review – from a beginner’s perspective

Like every other skill, drawing a bow requires repeated practice. Recurve bows are especially hard to pull. Practicing the release is important as well. That’s why experts recommend getting a recurve bow with a maximum of 30lbs draw weight. Tongtu bow fits the bill perfectly. You have the option to choose between 30lbs and 40lbs options. 30 pounds is a perfect starting point for most people, regardless of their gender and age, as long as they are in their teens or older. I’d say that the 40lbs option is a good draw weight to start with for adult males who’ve been exercising regularly. Unfortunately, the riser doesn’t allow you to adjust the draw weight of the Tongtu bow.

By looking at the price, you couldn’t guess that there are many extra accessories included besides the bow. The kit includes Fiberglass Arrows, target paper, arm guard, finger guard, and string nocks. The package doesn’t include an arrow quiver, which is disappointing. On the other hand, quivers that come with affordable recurve bows aren’t very impressive. You would have to buy a separate arrow quiver anyway. Having so many accessories included in the package is very handy if you don’t have time and energy to look for these accessories separately. Everything you’ll need to start shooting at targets is included in the set. Armguard and finger guard are particularly useful if you’re a beginner. Drawing a recurve bow, even if it is simple like this one, is dangerous. The string can cause serious damage to your arm and digits. Armguards and finger guards are supposed to protect you from those kinds of accidents.

Pros:

Simplicity – this bow has a very simple, but powerful design. Limbs can hold a lot of power and transfer it to the arrow once the string is released. Assembling this bow is easy and intuitive.

Excellent Customer Service – The brand takes itself seriously and maintains a high level of customer service. When it comes to bows, it is very important to trust the manufacturer. Poorly constructed bows can cause accidents.

Unbeatable Value – This kit includes so many accessories besides the bow itself. More importantly, these accessories are extremely useful if you’re new to the world of Archery. Normally, you would have to visit Sporting Goods store and buy everything separately. Buying everything as one package saves you a lot of time and energy, not to mention the money.  Price varies from time to time, but in any case, Tongtu Takedown recurve bow is one of the best deals on the market.

Double Arrow Rest – In my opinion, this is the defining feature of this bow. It allows left-handed people to shoot this bow. There are many similar recurve bow kits on the market, but most of them are not built for left-handed people. I’m right-handed myself, but I’m still thankful that there is a great product like Tongtu Recurve Bow for left-handed beginners.

Cons:

I tried hard and only came up with few legit flaws of this product. I say legit because not everything that could be improved is a flaw. For example, I wish the string was better, but if it was better, the bow would be more expensive. With that being said, here are the notable flaws:

Fiberglass splinters – I haven’t experienced this myself, but some customers say that they got fiberglass splinters when they ran their hands up and down the bow’s limbs.

Loudness – During the release, this bow is a bit louder than others. You may want to consider getting a string silencer with this bow.

Final Thoughts

Tongtu takedown bow is among the best options if you’re buying your first recurve bow. It is clearly the best in the category if you’re left-handed. Everything that you need to start hitting targets is included in the package with this bow. More likely than not, Tongtu recurve won’t be your main bow in the long run. Once you’re out of the beginner phase and get some experience under your belt, you should move on to more advanced recurve bows.

You can’t skip past the part of learning the basics of archery. If you want to get better, you must spend some time practicing with a simple bow. Spending hundreds of dollars on a bow won’t improve your skills. For someone who’s never shot an arrow before, Tongtu Takedown Bow is as good as it can get.
